The intersection between gaming and gambling is a rapidly evolving phenomenon. This is illustrated by the digitized and diversified nature of gambling activities, video games containing intrinsic gambling themes and increased opportunities to gamble via websites that allow wagering on e-sports. Furthermore, the convergence of these two domains appears to be accelerated by technological infrastructures that facilitate rapid payment purchases and online/real-time betting.
The ยูฟ่า777 of a new generation of video game-style games requiring players to wager virtual currency for a chance of winning more virtual currency is a recent example of this trend. The fact that these games have become so popular and that people wager large sums of money in them, has prompted concerns that the transition from games to real-money gambling may be occurring. This is a concern that is exacerbated by the age related transition of young adults from the 18-24 to the 25-34 years age groups and their relative lack of financial literacy and the sensitivity to risk taking.
From Gaming to Gambling – The Controversy of Online Betting Games
This study aims to explore the underlying motivations and drivers of participation in Pay-to-Win gambling games. To do so, a quantitative web survey was conducted using the User needs international survey panel whose members have volunteered to participate in online surveys based on their interests. The survey included items assessing the use of the different types of betting games and measures of disordered gambling. The results show that the frequency of spending both in gambling games and in Pay-to-Win games is a more significant predictor of participation than cumulative spending or total playtime.
